Jennie E
Capano
February 20, 1939 – May 9, 2026
Success is laughing all the time and genuinely enjoying life. It’s earning the respect of people who think for themselves and the pure trust of children. It’s taking honest feedback well, while moving past those who let you down. It’s about noticing the beauty around you and seeing the potential in everyone you meet. Success means leaving things better than you found them, whether that’s educating an eager child or fixing a broken system. If even one person’s life was better because you were part of it, you have succeeded. Jennie was someone who made your heart race. She was outspoken and well-liked. Over the years, she taught generation after generation that athletics ideally teach discipline and commitment. They challenge you and build character for everything you apply yourself to in your life.
The bell’s ringing sound marks the significance of the beginning and the end, a call to action, commands, and even warnings. In school, the bell meant it was the beginning or the end of another class. Today, that ring resonates. It marks the significance of the beginning of our lives without Jennie. Just as a patient rings the bell in transformation and celebration, we transform into our lives without her and celebrate a life, and an educator who, like a candle, used herself to light the way for others. Jennie Erma Capano passed away on Saturday, May 9, 2026, with the wisdom of 87 years.
Jennie was born in Camden, the daughter of Louis & his wife Charlotte (nee Stout) Capano, and had been a lifelong Collingswood and Oaklyn and area resident. She had been a congregant of the Oaklyn Baptist Church and received her Master's in Education from Temple University in 1962. Ms. Capano made her career as an educator in the Physical Education Dept of Haddon Twp. High School for over 30 years and had been inducted into the Haddon Twp. Athletics Hall of Fame in 2006. She was an ever-present coach, and after retirement, umpired both high school and town-ball softball. She volunteered her time in a hospice and as part of the Oaklyn Community Food Bank at the Oaklyn Baptist Church. Jennie possessed a wanderlust that filled her summers in Ocean City, across the globe to Europe, among many other destinations, and to her quiet, little retreat home in Everett, PA.
Jennie was predeceased by her lifelong companion, Anna Maxine King. She is survived and will be sadly missed by her nieces, Jean Tarnecki, Patricia Bowe, Barbara Caruso, Lousie Settimi. She is also survived by her great nieces, Dana Weatherby, Nicole Kier, Jillian Nardello, Heather Palladino, and great-great nieces and nephews Stephanie, Michael, Dominick, Hunter, Claire, Ashley, Chase, Vanessa, Alaina, and Vivian. Jennie was predeceased by her niece Irene & her husband Donald Fisher and is survived by her great nieces & nephews, Donald, III, Linda, and April.
We will toll the bell and come together in the time-honored tradition of laying our loved ones to rest privately.
