The two most important days in your life are the day you are born, and the day you find out why. Jim entered the United States Marine Corps from our nation's cradle of liberty in 1953, just after the conclusion of the Korean War. His home had contributed to the manpower of our great nation, upholding the ideals of our American freedoms. Our Marines don’t enter battles because they hate what’s in front of them, but for the love of what’s behind them.
Jim was a father of influence who led by example, a devoted husband, and a proud grandfather. As we express our gratitude, never forget that the highest appreciation is not to say words but to live by those words.
On Thursday, June 4, 2026, during the late afternoon, day was done, gone will be the sun, all is well, safely rest, God is nigh. After 91 years, Jim’s flag was retired, and the bugle sounded retreat.
James R. Carr was born in the fall of 1934 in Camden and spent his life in South Jersey, most recently as a neighbor of the Verga neighborhood in West Deptford. He made his career as an Electrician and spent his working years at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard. Jim enjoyed pressing lady luck at the casinos and had been a longtime member of both the Townsend C Young VFW Post 3620 and the Gloucester City American Legion Post 135.
Mr. Carr was predeceased by his wife, Bertha E. (nee Dick) Jones-Carr, and his late children, Steven Carr and Diane Benner. He is survived by his son, James Carr, 13 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, and his step-children, Terry (nee Jones) & her husband, Brad Fithian. Mr. Carr was predeceased by his step-children, the late Edward R. “Bobby” Benner, William Benner, and his late brothers, Jack, John and Martin Costello.
Relatives, friends, neighbors, and our community’s veterans are invited to gather with the Carr family. We’ll come together in tribute to those who have served, honoring Mr. Carr, the few and the proud, on Thursday morning between 11:00 am and 12:00 pm at McGee Celebration Etherington Funeral Home, 700 Powell St., Gloucester City, where Jim’s family will share their fond remembrances and favorite stories at 12:00 pm. United States Marine Corps Honors and the witness of love’s reunion will immediately follow at the Gloucester County Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 240 N. Tuckahoe Rd. Williamstown.
