Barbara E. Elder (nee Scheurich), 96, a lifelong neighbor in Gloucester City, passed away on Sunday, July 26, 2026, at St. Mary’s Home in Cherry Hill. Barbara was born in and spent her entire circle of days in the “Holy City”. Barbara was gently quiet. She lived a thousand lives reading the books she loved. Although it's only words, it’s all we have to take our hearts away. It's language that’s the most distilled and powerful. In those books and words is where emotion has found its thought and thought has found its words.

Mrs. Elder had held her faith dear and was a dedicated congregant at the Trinity United Methodist Church. Barbara was an avid bowler as well as an active part of the Gloucester Senior Citizens. At home, she was mom. A doting mother, wife, sister, and friend. Although she didn’t say much, you knew she was there… and cared.

Mrs. Elder was predeceased by her late, loving husband Robert, who passed in 2010. She will be deeply missed by her children, Robert & his wife Elaine, Elaine & her husband Earl Bond, Thomas & his wife Linda and Jerry Elder. Mrs. Elder is the proud grandmother of Robert, Michael, Christian (Amber), James (Makenzie), Ryan (Erin), Katelyn (John), Joe (late Kelly), Dave (Courtney), Lauren and great grandmother of Jackson, Abigail, Anthony, Brody, Landon, Maddox, Jake, Bella, Mason, Christian, Logan, Landon, Lola, Jubal and Judah. Barbara is also survived and will be sadly missed by her sister Eva Koenig and her dear friends Bill Murphy and Toni Whiting. Mrs. Elder was predeceased by her siblings, the late George Scheurich, Raymond Scheurich, Joseph Scheurich, Ella Wells, Jenny Flynn and Anna Hamilton.

Relatives, friends, a lifetime of Gloucester neighbors, and the congregation are invited to gather with the Elder family. We’ll come together to take comfort in each other, in tribute and thanksgiving, on Wednesday afternoon between 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm at Brooklawn United Methodist Church, 213 Maude Ave. Brooklawn. We’ll celebrate almost a century of life in faith at 6:00 pm, Pastor Daniel Amey presiding.
