While county veterans cemeteries do exist and are available to all eligible veterans, it’s important for families to know that these cemeteries often operate differently from national or state veterans cemeteries. Many county facilities charge fees for burial plots, openings, or other services. They may not provide the same “no expense” comprehensive benefit that comes with interment at a national or state veterans cemetery, where burial, markers, and perpetual care are provided at no charge. Families should always confirm what costs may apply before making decisions.

Headstones, Grave Markers, Medallions & Monuments (check with your chosen private cemetery)

Funeral Home Services Subsidy: $ 3,056.
Cemetery and/ or Crematory Sudsidy: $ 714.
Allowable Family Supplementation: $ 1,570.

Currently, the program contributes, on average, 37.5% of current retail funeral service, merchandise, and disposition service pricing, up from 18% in 2022, while the program is stautorily required to contribute 75% of current retail funeral service, merchandise and disposition service pricing. For four decades, the gap between actual reimbursements and statutory mandates has continued to widen, with minimal reinvestment by the state. If Medicaid cuts occur at the federal level, we could risk losing both the Medicaid Funeral Resource Exclusion spend-down process and WFNJ funeral reimbursements.

New Jersey funeral homes already bear a significant financial burden in helping the state and local communities meet their obligation to provide dignified funerals for those in need. If these funding cuts become a reality, that burden will only grow, making it even more challenging, if not impossible, for funeral homes to continue providing assistance.

Consumers today expect memorable and even meaningful experiences.

In a recent presentation to Germany’s food, beverage,sleep and hospitality industry, management consultant Joseph Pine, the founder and leader of the experience economy, shared these thoughts.

“There has been an accelerated shift into the experience economy. Covid-19 and the short years following have helped many of us see that we don’t need any more stuff. What gives meaning to our lives are shared experiences. Ordinary goods and services are no longer enough for guests and customers. Consumers today expect memorable and even meaningful experiences.

Who better than contemporary funeral homes and avant-garde funeral directors to co-create, stage, and manage meaningful albeit transformational shared experiences? When done correctly, funeral homes can engage families, or their “guests” and thrive quickly transcending the services into engaging experiences. As just a small example, Moments of just “unboxing” consumer products from mail-order companies have become shared experiences. Countless videos of personal and review YouTube videos capture and share the experience of unboxing with millions of views. Mail-order companies expertly craft these moments and experiences like; Empathy Wines, Yumble and of course Apple, among many others, that rise above just the sale of goods. Unboxing!? The cornerstone of the funeral home profession has always been service during the time a family, or guest, spends with our funeral home. Make it an experience! Nothing less.

Pine said “A service is intended to save time, save consumers and companies' effort. Service is about about time well saved. Experiences, on the other hand, are all about time well spent. During an experience, people value the time they spend with you. Guests commit to you and commit; to create a memory.”

This presentation could have easily been shared with the contemporary funeral home. These principles are even more so important during an unprecedented time of post-pandemic that has undoubtedly changed the way we exist and interact. The funeral home is experiencing and struggling with a decline in gatherings, rituals, ceremonies, and services that are the hallmark of the profession. Unfortunately, there seems to be no recovery without engaging experiences. How can a funeral home best present a well-thought-out beginning, middle, and end of your time together with guests using well-trained, characterized staff, processes, facilities, and products so that the staged experience becomes a guest’s sustained uplifting memory? I’m convinced that when a funeral home’s time comes to a close with guests they part with a sense of fulfillment and being uplifted. The funeral home has created that meaningful and engaging experience.

Pine continued to share, “Consumers need a reason to go to a physical store. COVID-19 and its fallout has accelerated digital consumer behavior by ten years, or more. More and more people are ordering online. The experience you offer as a company can become an even more important reason for consumers and guests to go to a physical place”.

Today, Technology is a large part of how a funeral home delivers service and stage experiences. On almost every occasion, obituaries, or as we call them “e-bituaries” are the most effective, easily searched, and engaged with through the funeral home’s web presence, including social media. Flowers are ordered almost exclusively through internet-based retailers and websites, including the funeral home’s. Tribute videos have been commonplace for some time, and live web streaming with on-demand recording is now a regular part of the goodbye experience. Optimizing classic service moments to build a better funeral home experience gives guests a good cause to choose a place for time well spent.

Work is theater and the funeral home is a stage. To give purpose to guests and their time it is important to stage an experience that draws undivided attention. The experience must be communicated in consistency with everything else the funeral home does, sustaining memory. As a result, guests will memorably spend their time while engaging the funeral home.

From Alternative To Mainstream Memorialization

T he Funeral ceremony is a culturally universal custom as old as father time himself. As long as people have died there has always been a need for memorializing the dead.

For example, Burial and death masks have had an important role in many societies. The ancient Egyptians put a personalized mask over the face of their mummies or the mask was to become part of the sarcophagus. According to the World Book Encyclopedia, in an annual mourning ceremony held in New Ireland, an island near Australia, dancers wear masks that memorialize specific dead persons. In Western countries, death masks are sometimes used to preserve the features of the dead. A plaster cast is made of the face and plaster likenesses are made from these molds, memorializing the facial characteristics of those who have died. Some famous death masks include those of Ludwig Van Beethoven and Napoleon Bonaparte.

Throughout our lives we develop relationships and the dynamic experiences within those relationships each leave indelible marks on our lives. When someone we love passes away it only seems fitting to leave an indelible mark on our skin, a tattoo, permanently memorializing our loved one on our own bodies.

Tattooing has existed as long as there has been skin to tattoo. In the Bronze Age, tattoos were probably used for therapeutic reasons. Tattooing in Polynesia, before the arrival of Europeans in the South Pacific, had evolved over thousands of years and was the most artistic tattooing of the ancient world. More recently, in today’s society, people of all ages, races, and cultures are getting tattooed.

One of the most popular reasons that people get tattooed is to memorialize someone who has died. It seems that the angel on your shoulder, or the praying hands over your heart, or the cross on the inside of your forearm is a permanent way to reaffirm and memorialize someone we care about.

Tattooing allows individuals to express the meaning and quality of a relationship in a very unique, personal, and artistic way. The tattoo, in essence, can tell a story, the way that a meaningful funeral experience also tells the story of a life once lived and legacy left behind. The visitation and the funeral ceremony afford us time to openly express our grief and acknowledge the accomplishments and memories that our loved ones have left us. Our body, more specifically our skin, has become a vast canvas that, through the art of tattooing, also acknowledges the fondest of memories and legacies left when life is complete.

Although tattooing is not for everyone tattoos no longer belong to the riff-raff, bikers or drunken sailors. Tattooing has become a mainstream art form in which every emotion can easily be inked into our skin, even memorializing our dead.

WHAT is Advanced Planning?

Advanced planning is a paradigm that gives inspiration for planners to consider and create a well thought out care strategy that directs and organizes an individual’s care preferences by identifying key decision makers and appointing them to positions of authority, that supports a chain of custody, as part of the patient experience and what I like to call the “farewell transition”. This plan includes giving thought to and planning for the event of an unknown emergency that’s immediately followed by; acute hospital care, sub-acute rehabilitation, long-term skilled nursing care, palliative and hospice care that take us to the “goodbye experience.”

Piecing together peace of mind for a mutually rewarding, seamlessly logical, transparent and consistent “farewell transition” plan, for those facing healthcare crises and their personal representatives, between the patient experience and the goodbye experience employs good decision making and best practices to distribute and execute authority vested in the appointment of; durable powers of attorney, living wills and/or healthcare proxies, funeral and disposition agents, executors or administrators.

Making a diligent effort to connect and manage these fragmented experiences give planners and personal representatives an opportunity to take a holistic approach that is financially achievable, using sound investment programs and potentially address and eliminate issues of conflict in our families, our care preferences and our directions.

Understanding Medicaid, Part 1

The Medicaid program was introduced as the Medicare and Medicaid Act, also known as the Social Security Amendment act by President Lyndon B. Johnson on July 30, 1965.

Medicaid is a federal health insurance program for individuals with limited incomes that is jointly financed by state and federal sources. The program is administered by individual states with broad federal guidelines.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health coverage if you are 65+ or under 65 and have a disability, no matter your income.

As long as you meet the federal qualifications for Medicare eligibility and the state-specific qualifications for Medicaid eligibility, you will qualify as a dual-eligible recipient.

NJ FamilyCare is New Jersey's publicly funded, federal and state funded, health insurance program created to help qualified New Jersey residents of any age access affordable health insurance. Qualified NJ residents of any age may be eligible for free or low cost health insurance that covers doctor visits, prescriptions, vision, dental care, mental health and substance use services and even hospitalization.

More recently, The Deficit Reduction Act of 2005, which became effective January 1, 2006 instituted a 5 year look back period from the date of a completed application submission. Previously it had been a 3 year look back period. This is where we remain today.

As part of NJ FamilyCare, The Work First New Jersey (WFNJ) program is funded by the State of New Jersey with a budget line item through the Department of Human Services (DHS). The program is administered on a county level by local county welfare agencies (CWAs).

The State of New Jersey could potentially contribute to funeral service & disposition expenses through the Department of Human Services (DHS).

The maximum amount the state will contribute for funeral home services & merchandise is $ 3,056.00. The contribution for the cemetery or crematory portion of expenses is $ 714.00 for a combined, total contribution of $ $ 3,770.00.

The state allows interested parties to contribute toward a public assistance funeral. interested parties can apply supplementation to funeral home costs, cemetery costs or both. However, the state limits how much supplementation is allowed.

The supplementation cap is $1,570 for individuals aged two and over. If the family contributes more than $1,570 the state will reduce payment dollar for dollar or exclude the decedent from eligibility entirely.

The decedent's assets cannot be used to supplement their own funeral service & disposition expenses. These assets will be collected by the State of NJ as part of the state’s asset recovery. A decedent's assets will not affect the reimbursement received by Funeral Directors and Cemeteries.

Be a Funeral Director/Embalmer, you’ll make a difference they said…

I know you are in a place you don’t want to be, talking to someone you don’t want to be talking to, about something you don’t want to be talking about. Trust me, I know. I wish you didn’t have to do any of those things either. But then there’s reality.

Sometimes I’m a referee because someone got Grandpa’s pocket knife or grandma’s cookbook. Or maybe he was married to you first but had kids with his second wife…. either way, now’s not the time or place. Let me give them a dignified service, afterward, you can do whatever... but until we’re done, be adults.

Sometimes we’re nothing short of an artist. Some people have a gift for certain things. I know what mine is. Humbly. Sometimes we spend so many hours getting someone ready for a viewing because that accident was a bad one… and you just want to see them one last time. I would too. And in one or two cases, I’ve failed… it just wasn’t there. And for that, I’m so sorry.

Sometimes we’re looked at as the money-hungry undertaker. Trust me, the overhead is astronomical. A complete professional staff readily available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year is taxing. It’d scare you. Literally.
Sometimes you’re angry at me, I get it… and it’s okay, I understand. When I’m walking out of the hospital with a baby in hand and two security guards don’t like me much either. I’ve learned that the smaller the casket, the heavier it is. If you don’t speak to me when I see you around town it’s okay… again, I understand.

Sometimes there are dark circles under our eyes because we’ve been up for a couple of days. So if we just say “hi” and move on, we’re trying to get home for a little sleep. Please understand.

And sometimes we are left taking care of our own. Our own family, our own friends, and our own brotherhood… with honor, and with the utmost dignity and respect, as always.
So yeah, be a Funeral Director… some days we make a difference.

Funeral Service Inside Catergory X

In today’s economic environment almost every enterprise has evolved from selling products and/ or services to the consumer, to using goods and services as props, staging economic experiences with the “guest”. The urban dictionary has exploded with new jargon to attach to the deliverables. “Eatertainment”, “Funtertainment” and “Edutainment” are some of the buzzwords born out of the “Exponomy”.

Joseph Pine, II and James H. Gilmore launched new economic value and opportunity in 1998 with their book “ The Experience Economy, Work is theater and every business is a stage .” The writers challenged and propagated enterprises to orchestrate memorable events for their customer base. Pine & Gilmore emphasized that the memory, sustained by the engaged customer, becomes the product itself.

Since 1998, all sorts of industries have made landslide shifts into the experience economy. We've seen restaurants like the Hard Rock Cafe, the Rainforest Cafe and many others successfully leverage their enterprises by combining entertainment value such as music memorabilia and audio-animatronic characters, as an example, with their food service to immerse their guests in their respective stories. These enterprises delivered stories by engaging their customers with a sense of nostalgia, excitement and adventure among others. As an example, Rainforest Cafe doesn’t announce to their guests that their table is ready, instead they announce that “the guests’ adventure is about to begin.”

At the core of the experience economy there is the delivery of a story. No one excels at storytelling in an engaging way better than the Walt Disney Company. Disney has been “imagineering” ways or blending creative imagination with technical know-how to engage their guests as far back as the early 1970’s.

As a recent example, Walt Disney World in Florida opened the “Toy Story midway Mania” attraction in May of 2008. the attraction combines the storyline of the above mentioned movie with classic carnival midway games for the guest to engage in.

When guests enter the attraction a compelling story unfolds as they move through the que. The Imagineers effectively use the time and space between the entrance and the beginning of the actual ride attraction to execute an engaging experience. One that is probably better than the physical ride experience itself.

Guests are immersed in the sights, sounds and cues supporting the essence of the Toy Story movie along with larger than life displays of easily recognizable childhood toys tapping in to the guests’ sense of nostalgia and care free play. Everything from the Candyland board game; checkers and Lincoln Logs to Scrabble, a Barrel of Monkeys and an audio animatronic Mr. Potato Head, also a character in the Toy Story Movie, to interact with guests are included.

This que, in particular, uses familiar toys and games to spark childhood memories in an entertaining way that ties the guest and a lifetime of emotional experiences directly to the Toy Story movie. The economic deliverable or “Funtertainment” leaves the guests with a sustained memory of careless childhood play becoming the economic offering (the price of admission); the service or the experience itself.

What we can learn from “Eatertainment”, “Funtertainment” and the Exponomy are generating engaging ideas in which to develop best practices for innovative display and presentation methods that are rooted in a core story, in the funeral or memorial experience, to engage our guests in a compelling story unique to the life we’re called on to celebrate. Low & behold “Funeraltainment”!

“Life Celebration” is a philosophy which focuses on and celebrates a lifetime of interests, passions, hobbies, accomplishments, achievements and relationships that rely on good and effective storytelling that should and can be delivered in an entertaining way. “Funeraltainment” is an exceptional experience using time and space to tell the core story of a life well lived using direct cues that call on nostalgia, engage the guests senses and capture the essence of a lifetime well lived.

Just as the Rainforest Cafe looks beyond the functionality of the restaurant service delivery so too is the funeral home poised to look beyond the functionality of its service delivery. Inside “category X” the transformative “funeraltainment” delivers memorial experiences with creative design and a business model infrastructure to sustain it. Tim Brown, CEO of global design firm IDEO said of experience design; “Design thinking is a human-centered approach… to integrate the needs of people, the possibilities of technology and the requirements for business success.” Understanding how guests behave in your funeral home will assist you in visualising and conceptualizing the time, space and technology to orchestrate an engaging experience. How do guests interpret and experience your service delivery currently? What can you change, design or facilitate for a positive and entertaining difference that, along with your guests, co-creates a unique, relevant experience?

In this transformative mode of thinking and approach to the human goodbye experience, Incorporating the needs of people is holistic in nature combining the guests; services, technology and the core story for a blended, multi-sensory experience.
